Agricola was the governor of Britain for seven years in the later part of the 1st century AD, and this account of his life, written by his son-in-law the historian Cornelius Tacitus, is a primary source for the Roman conquest of the north of Britain. The text is amplified by an extensive commentary enlarging on all sorts of details about the country and people of Britain; the introduction includes substantial essays on the geography and conquest of Britain, and on Agricola's army as well as on the language and style of Tacitus' writing. Further topics are discussed in four appendices.
