Anna Comnena (1083-1148), eldest daughter of the Byzantine emperor Alexius I, wrote the Alexias, a biography of her father and contemporary account of the First Crusade from the Byzantine perspective. This book, first published in 1929, remains the only full length study of this important early woman historian and an important look at her medieval Greek society.
