Musurillo¹s critical editions, with translations and commentaries, or ancient martyr literature, survey the development of the genre, discussing the political and historical background which produced it and the relationship between the pagan and Christian ŒActa¹.
The first volume presents the ³Acta Alexandrinorum², texts written between AD17 and AD217 reporting the trials of Alexandrian (Greek) heroes punished by the Roman authorities. The second volume contains 28 texts written from c. 155 A.D. to 324 A.D., ranging from eyewitness accounts to imaginative fiction of the trial and execution of Christians by the Romans.
