Colony and Mother in Ancient Greece.

Graham, A. J.

Manchester University Press, 1999 (reprint of 1964 edition).

Book Number 21584

Not just the intrinsic interest in colonizing activity has sparked the centuries-long scholarly investigation of the relations between Greek colonies and their mother cities. Greek colonies had a closer tie of relationship with their mother city than existed between Greek city-states in general, yet the colony formed a separate political entity from the mother city, which allowed for a great variety in forms of association. In this book, the author first describes the Greek ideas and general practices regarding the founding of colonies, then examines cities such as Thasos, Milteus, Corinth, Argos, and Athens during the 8th to 4th c. BCE.
