Saracenic Heraldry: A Survey.

Mayer, L. A.

Oxford University Press (Clarendon Press), 1998 (reprint of 1933 edition).

cloth, dj., 302 pp. + 21 plates.

Book Number 20955

A fully documented armorial roll of Saracenic sultans and emirs, designed to meet the requirements of students of Muslim archaeology, Mayer's book covers the geographical area of Syria, Palestine and Egypt during the period from the end of the Crusades to the Ottoman conquest. It remains the best available work on the subject. The armorial roll is a listing of holders of Ayyubid and Mamluk blazons, each with a description of the blazon, explanation of inscriptions and a bibliography, although in many cases this is the first published account. The roll is preceded by a comprehensive introduction in which Mayer discusses the sources for the study of Saracens.
