This is the first full critical edition of the Epinal-Erfurt Glossary, which dates from the 8th century and constitutes the earliest Old English text of any length. The forms of the two manuscripts are printed in full in parallel columns with an apparatus designed to illustrate their relationship with later Old English glossaries. Pheiffer's Introduction deals at length with the sources of the Epinal-Erfurt Glossary and with related material in other glossaries such as the Corpus, Cleopatra and Harley, proposing a number of new interpretations as well as offering a unique insight into the beginnings of Anglo-Saxon literary culture. Extensive notes follow the texts, plus an index of lemmata and index of interpretations.
