Hegel's pamphlets and commentaries dealing with topical political issues, being relatively free of speculative elements and philosophical jargon, are more accessible than the major works and offer insights into Hegel's basic political thinking. In the words of Pelczynski they show 'that this perhaps most metaphysical of political thinkers kept a firm eye on facts, past and present, and could pursue the smallest details of political arrangements with the passion of an empiricist'. The book is in two parts: an extended essay by the distinguished political scientist Z A Pelczynski, followed by Knox's translations (with notes) from Schriften zur Politik und Rechtsphilosophie, hrsg. von George Lasson (2nd ed.1923).
