One of the outstanding English historians of this century, K B McFarlane (1903-66) transformed the study of late medieval history, turning from narrative sources to new types of documentary evidence to explore broad political, social and religious themes. This volume presents two sets of lectures originally delivered to undergraduates in Oxford, 1936-53, plus a single lecture on Henry V, read at the Workers' Educational Assoc. in 1954. The first set, edited by G L Harriss, deals with the life and career of Henry of Bolingbroke, later Henry IV. The lectures on Lollardy, edited by J R L Highfield, examine the circumstances in which the movement arose and identify the influences that fostered its early growth.
