Based on a re-examination of the sources, Hollister's book presents a full and coherent picture of old English military institutions as they existed in the decades immediately preceding the Norman Conquest - an era he calls "late-Saxon England". The study is concerned with institutions rather than the art of war, and its approach is topical and analytical rather than chronological. Written in 1960, it challenged contemporary historical opinion and portrayed the Anglo-Saxon host as a vigorous and effective military force that "could hold its own against any army in Christendom". Hollister is now recognised as one of the leading authorities on European medieval history.
