Building in England Down to 1540: A Documentary History.

L. F. Salzman

Oxford University Press (Clarendon Press), 1997 (reprint of 1952 edition).

Cloth, dj.

Book Number 18694

Saltzman's study of medieval architecture is concerned not with style but with the actual process of building, and is based on meticulous examination of contemporary documentary evidence. Beginning with masons and architects, organisation of the workforce and wages, the book presents a detailed account of medieval building practice, each chapter dealing with a different material or element of construction. Extensive appendices contain a wealth of documents (building quotations and contracts), and the text itself is alive with detail and anecdote portraying medieval building works and workers, and the vocabulary they used.
