Sancti Romani Melodi Cantica: Cantica Genuina.

Maas, Paul & Trypanis, C.A.

Oxford University Press (Clarendon Press), 1997 (reprint of 1963 edition).

cloth, dj., 546 pp.

Book Number 17346

Romanos, called the Melodist (fl.c.AD 540), is the greatest poet of the Greek Orthodox church, and one of the most distinguished writers of the early Middle Ages. Modern scholarship has called his major cantica "masterpieces of world literature." The present volume was the first full critical edition of all the poet's genuine cantica. The result of 50 years' of research by Professor Maas, completed, with the collaboration of Professor Trypanis, in 1963, the work re-examines and reassesses earlier scholarship. It provides a metrical Appendix which explains the poet's elaborate metres, and includes a number of hitherto unpublished cantica by Romanos.
