That Bruce MacFarlane (1903-1966) was an outstanding historian of late medieval England is acknowledged despite the "obsessive search for completeness" that stopped him from publishing. In studies of Lancastrian finance, "bastard" feudalism, and the governing class in the 15th century McFarlane pioneered the use of private archives, and went on exploring new sources and revising to the end of his life. This volume of his lectures was eventually edited and annotated by McFarlane's pupil, JP Cooper in 1973, and includes an introductory essay on McFarlane's contribution to English history.
