Leges Henrici Primi

Downer, L.J. (ed.)

Oxford University Press (Clarendon Press), 1996 (reprint of 1972 edition).

cloth, dj., 460 pp.

Book Number 16560

The Leges Henrici Primi is a collection of Anglo-Saxon laws of various kinds dating from the early 12th century, and therefore compiled before the common law began its great progress. Although supposedly the laws in force during the reign of Henry I, as a treatise on the current legal system, the Leges are incomplete but do follow a theme of royal jurisdiction. The Latin text is presented here with facing English translation, detailed commentary and an introduction that discusses the nature of the Leges and places the text in historical context.
